"Culling symbolic shapes from botanical and anatomical sources, Jaap abstracts and rescales their contours, and transfers them onto her painted surfaces. Often the application of an archetypal shape—a tree ring, a throat, a rose, an inkblot—is applied freehand as if Jaap has already embodied the shape in order to reenact it gesturally with paint or pencil on the canvas. To reiterate these rhythmic patterns is a way for Jaap to identify the resonant possibilities of nature and humankind."
